Passwords

Passwords are more important than you think

Passwords are more important than you think. We all have extensive digital footprints in today’s day and age. We visit several different websites for various things like banking transactions, social media, online shopping and much more.

All these websites urge us to make an account so that we can keep easy track of all our activities. To secure these accounts, we require passwords. Passwords that must be at least 8 characters long with one special character, one capital letter, one number and so on, in order to be strong. The only problem is remembering so many different passwords becomes a strenuous task.

Let’s first understand what goes into creating a strong password in the first place.

Traits of a Strong Password

According to experts, the strength of a password is directly related to the amount of time and computing power required to crack it. Thus, the more complex the password, the stronger it is. Follow these guidelines:

  1. Keep your password as long as possible
  2. Do not use regular dictionary words
  3. Do not use common patterns
  4. Mix and match everything available on the keyboard
  5. Do not recycle your passwords

You must be thinking, if we follow all these guidelines, there is no way to then remember so many passwords. And storing passwords securely is another gigantic task. Not to worry. Today we will discuss how to set strong passwords that are memorable as well.

Setting Memorable Strong Passwords

Remembering a 12-character long password with alphanumeric patterns and special character requires special skills. This is the biggest reason that most of us choose the names of our friends and family (not a top-secret) as our passwords. You don’t have to resort to such measures now. Just apply these tricks and you can have a memorable strong password.

  1. Use sentences as your password

Choose a sentence from your favourite song, book or from your chosen movie. Turn that into your password. For example, take this dialogue from the movie The Godfather, ‘Great men are not born great, they grow great’, which converts into a password like ‘GtMnrntbngrt,tygwg8’. You can have an endless supply of strong passwords in this manner.

  1. The keyboard is your canvas

Turn your keyboard into a canvas and then draw a pattern of your choice. The keys that your pattern touches can then become your password.

Then, Vgy7654bnM becomes your unique password.

  1. Put it in reverse

Sometimes the simplest thing can be the best solution. As is in this case. Pick your favourite thing and put it in reverse to get a good strong password. Take for instance I love blackcurrant flavour, so I can use that as tnarruckcalb@#789 in my password.

These are just a few tips to create strong passwords that you will be able to remember easily. There are several other ways you can mend these to create something suitable for you. Play around keeping in mind the basic guidelines and you will never be short of strong passwords to protect your valuable things.
